Central area

Japan’s Number One Stone Steps / Shakainmisaka Yuhodo (Shakainmisaka Promenade)

Kumamoto’s own, Japan’s Number One flight of Stone Steps, all in 3,333 steps - all made of exquisite stones from ten different locations and granite from seven countries. The obvious challenge here is to get to the top; but no worries, there are restrooms and rest areas along the way.

The flight of stairs leading to ”Shakain” were placed in 1988 on ”Misaka” (the hill) in hopes of reviving this town by bringing in more tourism. The annual, staple event ”Attack The Japan’s Number One” is held here in November as well.
