Facilities

Kumamoto Castle, also known as ”Ginnnan Castle”, is one of the three best castles of Japan. Famous regional lord, Kato Kiyomasa, began the construction of the castle in 1601 and it was completed seven years later. The premises of this magnificent citadel measures up to be 980,000 square meters (approximately 9 kilometers in circumference at the time of construction) with main towers, 49 turrets, 18 yagura (gates with a turret), and 29 entry gates. Japanese statesman and naval engineer, Katsu Kaishu, once stated; ”there are no other castles like this castle”, praising its intimidating size and height.

The castle proved its reputation during Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 by withstanding against the attacks of Saigo Takamori and his rebel fighters for 50 day; however, an accidental fire from an unknown source inflamed the fortress, leaving nothing but only 12 turrets in sight.

The Main Tower (or the ”tenshukaku”) standing today is a replica reconstructed in 1960 for the 350-year anniversary of Kiyomasa as well as the 70-year anniversary of Kumamoto City. The castle and its park area are famous for the cherry blossoms, drawing over 10,000 visitors every year for the annual viewing of over 600 cherry trees in three different types. The park will be open to the public at night while the cherry flowers are in full bloom from late March to early April; the buildings and the trees will be lit up with ambient lights during that particular season. Adding to the excitement, the Honmaru Goten just opened up in 2008 to replicate a castle palace there once existed as well.
