Site of Hitoyoshi Castle

For approximately 700 years, from the Kamakura period to the end of the Edo period, this site served as the home of the Sagara family and is one of Japan's Top 100 Castles. It was ingeniously designed using the Kuma River and Mune River as natural moats, and the entire castle ruins are designated as a National Historic Site. The castle is also known as Sengetsu Castle (meaning "crescent moon" castle) due to the discovery of a stone with a crescent moon pattern on it during renovation by the Sagara family. The Ninomaru and Sannomaru areas offer panoramic views of the Hitoyoshi cityscape, and in spring, the area becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing spot.
