The legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, came to Higo region in 1640 by the invitation of Daimyo Hosokawa Tadatoshi. This cave is where he completed writing his tactic book ”the Book of Five Rings”. The wide opening of the cave is located on a steep and heavily wooded side of Mt. Kinbo, and the assumption that Musashi might have passed away in it only a week after the completion of his writing adds to the already solmn atmosphere of the premises.
You will find a gong and Toryo writings carved on the inside of the cave walls, and the wooden sword Musashi used to fight against another prominent sword master, Sasaki Kojiro, has been kept at the neighboring Reiganzenji Temple as well.
Many Musashi fanatics still come to visit this cave today.
